Meet David Brown, Your Experienced HVAC Designer
I’m David Brown, an experienced HVAC designer with four decades of hands-on field experience in the heating and air conditioning industry. While I’ve worn many hats throughout my career, residential HVAC design has always been my true passion, especially custom home projects. In 2011, I founded ConsultAir to focus on it exclusively, and the past decade and a half has meant staying current through every code cycle and software generation since.
Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with hundreds of homeowners, homebuilders, HVAC contractors, and architects across the country, delivering code-compliant designs that ensure optimal comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term performance.
How it all started:
Following in my Father’s footsteps, I began my journey into the HVAC industry back in 1986 by attending a heating, air conditioning & refrigeration vocational school at night while still attending high school during the day. Fresh out of high school I accepted my first position as a residential HVAC duct installer.
Since then, I’ve held positions such as; Commercial Test and Air Balance Technician, HVAC Territory Manager, HVAC New Construction Project Manager, Service Manager and General Manager. Later in my career I worked as a Purchasing Agent for 2 of the largest national home builders; Pulte Homes and KB Home. I’ve also held state HVAC contractor’s licenses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina and was a Certified Building Energy Rater in the state of Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions About ConsultAir
- ConsultAir is an independent residential HVAC design firm. ConsultAir performs ACCA Manual J load calculations, Manual S equipment sizing, and Manual D duct design for builders, contractors, and homeowners nationwide, delivered remotely from architectural and structural plans.
- An independent HVAC designer performs the code-required Manual J, S, and D calculations that size a home’s heating and cooling system and its ductwork, separate from HVAC equipment sales and installation. This separation removes the conflict of interest that comes with a contractor also designing the system they will sell and install.
- Nationwide. ConsultAir works entirely from architectural plans, structural drawings, and location-specific climate data — the design process runs on a desktop computer using ACCA-certified software, not on-site. Location is not a factor in the quality of the design.
- Three groups: custom home builders needing HVAC design integrated into new-construction plans; HVAC contractors who need independent, third-party ACCA-compliant calculations and duct drawings; and homeowners planning new builds, additions, or major renovations.
- A room-by-room Manual J load calculation report, Manual S equipment sizing recommendations, and a to-scale Manual D duct design drawing. Together these give the installing contractor everything needed to install a correctly sized, code-compliant residential HVAC system.
- No. ConsultAir provides HVAC design and calculation services only. ConsultAir does not install HVAC equipment, does not sell or supply equipment, and does not perform maintenance or repair work.
